Sponsor Licence Priority Services: A Practical Guide for UK Employers

Applying for a UK sponsor licence can be a slow process - even when everything has been prepared carefully. Standard processing times can stretch to several weeks, and for businesses with live hiring needs, that delay can have real commercial consequences.

To help employers manage tight recruitment timelines, UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) offers two fast-track options:

  • Pre-Licence Priority Service - for faster decisions on new sponsor licence applications

  • Post-Licence Priority Service - for faster processing of certain changes after a licence has been granted

These services can be valuable tools when used strategically, but they are not shortcuts. Understanding how they work - and when they make sense - is essential.

Pre-Licence Priority Service: Accelerating Your Sponsor Licence Decision

Before a business can sponsor overseas workers, it must first be granted a sponsor licence. Under the standard process, this decision can take around eight weeks. The Pre-Licence Priority Service is designed to reduce this to approximately 10 working days, provided all requirements are met.

How the Service Works

The priority request must be made while the sponsor licence application is still pending and before UKVI has started processing it. Once the priority fee is paid and all supporting documents are submitted, UKVI aims to issue a decision within 10 working days.

The clock starts the working day after payment and document submission. Any delay in providing evidence, or any follow-up request from the Home Office, can pause or extend this timeframe.

Cost

The priority service fee is £750, payable in addition to the standard sponsor licence application fee. The fee is non-refundable, even if the application is refused or delayed due to missing information.

When Priority Makes Sense

The pre-licence priority service can be particularly useful where:

  • A critical hire is waiting overseas

  • A project depends on securing overseas talent quickly

  • Delays would affect delivery, revenue or contractual obligations

However, priority processing does not increase the likelihood of approval. It simply speeds up the decision where the application is complete, accurate and compliant.

Post-Licence Priority Service: Faster Changes After Your Licence Is Granted

Holding a sponsor licence comes with ongoing responsibilities. Over time, employers often need to request changes through the Sponsor Management System (SMS) - such as increasing their Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) allocation or updating key personnel.

Under standard processing, some of these requests can take several months. The Post-Licence Priority Service allows certain changes to be considered much faster, typically within five working days.

What Can Be Fast-Tracked

This service can be used for specific post-licence requests, including:

  • Requests for additional undefined Certificates of Sponsorship

  • Changes to key personnel (Authorising Officer, Level 1 users)

  • Updates to core business details, such as address changes

Each request must first be submitted through the SMS before applying for priority processing.

Cost and Availability

The fee is £350 per request, and each change requires a separate priority application. Availability is limited, with a daily cap on the number of priority requests accepted, meaning timing is important.

Only sponsors with an active, A-rated licence are eligible. Organisations using the Premium Sponsor Service must route changes through their account manager instead.

Priority Processing: What It Does - and What It Doesn’t Do

Priority services can significantly reduce waiting times, but they do not reduce scrutiny. Applications are assessed against the same legal and compliance standards as non-priority cases.

In practice, this means:

  • Incomplete or inconsistent applications can still be delayed

  • Additional document requests can extend timelines

  • Priority fees are not refunded if UKVI requires further checks

Priority is best viewed as a planning tool, not a safety net.

Getting It Right First Time

Because the margin for error is smaller with priority applications, preparation matters. Documentation should be ready before the request is made, internal roles and responsibilities should be clear, and records should align with Home Office expectations.

For post-licence changes, timing is particularly important where recruitment depends on CoS availability or where business changes need to be reflected quickly on the sponsor licence.

At Imminova, we help employers manage sponsor licence applications, priority requests and ongoing SMS activity through our digital platform - making it easier to move quickly without losing control of compliance.

Final Thought

Priority services won’t fix a weak application, but when used well, they can remove unnecessary delays and keep recruitment plans on track. For businesses hiring globally, speed matters - but clarity, accuracy and compliance matter more.

If you’re weighing up whether priority processing is right for your situation, a clear strategy upfront can save both time and cost later.
